ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION The invention is an electrochemical cell component having two planarly disposed electrodes bonded to or intimately pressed against opposing sides of a proton exchange active film; said film having: (a) sulfonyl ion exchange active groups present in their protonated form; (b) an equivalent weight of less than about 1000; and (c) a storage modulus of greater than about 1 x 108 dynes/sguare centimeter at a tempera- ture greater than about 110°C. The invention is particularly useful in proton exchange polymer film fuel cells.
