A proximity alarm for an apparatus for excavating with pressurized liquid includes a mounting assembly adapted to be secured to a spray head. A spray head guard depends from and is movable relative to the mounting assembly. At least one switch is disposed between the mounting assembly and the spray head guard. The switch is connected to an alarm circuit which includes signals an operator. Movement of the spray head guard relative to the mounting assembly triggers the switch resulting in a signal being sent to the operator.
