A proximity detection unit for detecting the presence of other neighboring proximity detection units comprising an RF module, a range determination module, a collision alert module, an ID determination module, a travel member group creation module and a travel member discriminator. The RF module has a transmitter and a receiver for receiving at least one received identification signal. The range determination module determines a range value from at least one received identification signal. The collision alert module is adapted to receive the range value and provide an alert signal to a user warning of proximity of the other neighboring proximity detection units. The ID determination module generates ID data from the received identification signal. The travel member group creation module receives the ID data and builds a list of travel members. The travel members are associated with other proximity detection units forming part of a convoy or travel group. The travel member discriminator receives the list and modifies the alert signal when ID data from the other neighboring proximity detection units is on the list of travel members.
