In a communications system including a plurality of base stations, each of which is employed to communicate with a corresponding geographic sector, a method of assigning N transmission channels, each channel having a corresponding channel number, to be used by the plurality of base stations. In the method, a set of N random numbers is generated. Each random number corresponds to a channel number. The set of random numbers is partitioned into a plurality of sectors, each of the sectors corresponding to a geographic region serviced by one of the plurality of base stations. Based upon the partitioned set of random numbers, corresponding channels are assigned for use by each one of the base stations. According to one embodiment, two channel numbers in the same sector are separated into different sectors if the difference between the two channels numbers is equal to or less than a predetermined number. When the predetermined number is one, two consecutive channel numbers are separated.
