A device for stopping a puck travelling in a given direction along a predetermined trajectory comprises two belts mounted on respective pairs of pulleys. The two belts comprises respective belt runs generally facing each other, situated on opposite sides of the predetermined trajectory, and converging in the given direction of travel to form a V-shaped constriction. In operation, the puck travelling along the predetermined trajectory reaches the V-shaped constriction and squeezes between the two convergent belt runs whereby the resistance to movement of the puck increases and the puck is decelerated until it is stopped. Stopping of the puck is made quiet by the resiliency and flexibility of the material forming the two belts. Advantageously, the puck stopping device comprises first and second belt support mechanisms on which the respective belts and pulleys are mounted, these belt support mechanisms being articulated on pivots to squeeze the puck between the two belt runs while the two belts are driven through the pulleys for thereby propelling the puck in view of returning it to a start position thereof.
