ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pulley assembly for lifting loads in gradients. including: a main frame adapted to be mounted to an overlying horizontal part of a ground supported structure. A first pulley is journalled to the main frame and is engaged by a first cable, the first cable defining a trailing section adapted to carry a load to be lifted at one end thereof. A second pulley is journalled to the main frame and is engaged by a second cable. A lever arm pivoted to the main frame locks the first cable against rotation about the first pulley. The second cable defines a trailing section, fixedly secured to the lever arm, and a lead section, extending downwardly to a pulley assembly operator. The lever arm biases two disks, which are mounted to the main frame, toward each other. Since the lead section of the first cable passes between these two disks, this cable cannot freely rotate around its pulley in normal conditions because it is frictionally taken in sandwich between the two disks. The lever arm carries also a Y-shaped bracket engaging the lead section of the first cable, so that upon the ground operator pulling the bottom end of the second cable lead section, the two disks will move apart from each other, enabling progressive lifting of the load at the end of the trailing section of the first cable.
