The invention provides equipment and a process for the production of fluids from an oil or gas bearing formation penetrated by a well. The equipment includes a hydraulic motor connected to a rotary drive assembly forming an opening through the motor rotor and the rotary drive shaft so that the rod string can fit through this opening. The rod string is then coupled to the hydraulic motor by a mechanical means. The hydraulic motor and rotary drive assembly sits on top of the wellhead, the rotating components are now coupled directly to the rod string and the rod string is connected to the rotor of the downhole pump. The hydraulic motor transfers rotational forces to the rod string, which transfers rotational forces to the downhole pump stator.
