The present disclosure describes a method of making pulp and/or a paper substrate. The method comprises bleaching/extracting a plurality of Kraft fibers with a chlorine based bleaching agent for the final time , washing the plurality of bleached Kraft fibers after bleaching/extracting, and, after washing, contacting a the plurality of bleached Kraft fibers in solution with at least one optical brightener during or after non-chlorine bleaching/extracting and prior to both a blend chest stage and a machine chest stage.
