ABSTRACT The present translators are able to translate a linear PCM code into a companded PCM code according to the A- or mu-law and vice-versa. Each translator calculates a corresponding relatively simple function wherein only one parameter (K') is dependent on a control bit (A) whose value indicates the A-law or the mu-law respectively. The invention also describes a shift register cell and a multiplier device used in these translators. It was implemented on a 2 mm2 silicon area using NP-CMOS.
