An oximetry sensor (10) constructed in- cluding first and second opposed shell mem- bers (11, 12) for engaging the opposite sides of a patient's finger. A pair of LED's (43, 44) is releasably connected to the first mem- ber (11) for projecting light through the finger and a light detector (45) is mounted on the other member (12) for detecting unabsorbed light transmitted through the finger. One of the shell members (11) is mounted for slid- ing movement on the other (12) for engaging the opposite sides of the patient's finger and a coupler (14) retains the shell members (11, 12) in position. In a first embodiment, the LED's (43, 44) are directly releasably coupled to the first member (11) and in a second embodi- ment a fiber optic cable releasably couples the LED's (43, 44) to the first member (11).
