PULSED ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD DETECTION SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus and method for avoiding deleterious effects on cardiac pacemakers while detecting the presence of electromagnetic markers in an interrogation zone of an electronic article surveillance system. It has been found that pulsing the magnetic field in an interrogation zone avoids problems associated with the interference of the functioning of cardiac pacemakers. The field in the interrogation zone is maintained at a low level until the presence of an individual is sensed in the interrogation zone. Upon such sensing, the energy level of the field is raised for a period sufficiently long to the detect the presence of a marker, but not long enough to seriously interfere with the functioning of a pacemaker. The system will remain at a low level thereafter for a sufficient period so as not to adversely affect a pacemaker wearer who is in the vicinity of the system.
