ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A comminuting apparatus wherein a gaseous carrier is employed to transport particulate matter comminuted therein, having a generally cylindrical grinding chamber bounded at one end by a planar rotatable comminuting means and at the other end thereof by a generally annular configuration. Said other end includes a radial flow classifying means and a semi-toroidal channel segment. The radial flow classifying means is in the nature of a truncated conically shaped rotor having vane members. The associated semi-toroidal gas flow directing channel segment is formed by a ring member. The inner surface of the ring member is contoured arcuately about an upper edge of an annular isolating baffle member disposed substantially parallel to the periphery of the vane members of the classifying rotor intermediate said rotor and an exterior wall of the grinding chamber. The outer marginal edge portions of the vane members form a smooth continuation of another surface of said ring member. The inner marginal edge portions of the vane members form a smooth continuation of another surface of said ring member. Said apparatus may also include the following: an annular dependent flange on the downstream side of the ring member and the vane members being complementally i contoured to provide a flange receiving recess at their upper ends; a plurality of venting apertures in an extending flange of a drive shaft supporting sleeve; an isolating chamber, formed by a shroud and the drive shaft supporting sleeve; a fluid intake manifold and a baffle disposed within the isolating chamber, and an exterior surface of the shroud member including a layer of insulating material; an auxiliary product feed conduit located at the apex of a curved upper surface of the semi-toroidal gas flow directing channel segment; an oversize-particle delivery aperture provided in a baffle closely adjacent to the grinding chamber's wall; and a delivery tube adapted to be connected thereto. ii
