12 Pump Apparatus Abstract A pump assembly including a pump casing 10 defining an impeller chamber 24 in which an impeller 22 is rotat- ably enclosed. A discharge member 60 conducts fluid from the impeller chamber to a pump outlet 62 and defines a discharge passage 70 including a portion 70a diverging outwardly in cross-section, communicating with a chamber outlet 78 through a short connecting passage 70b, and connected to the pump outlet by an interconnecting pas- sage portion 70c. The diverging portion 70a is defined by lower and upper diverging walls 72, 74 which diverge downwardly and upwardly with respect to a plane of the impeller. A center line 100 of the diverging portion of the discharge passage intersects the axis 102 of the pump outlet at substantially 90° to define an elbow.
