There is provided a screening apparatus for use in pump cells such as are used in the mining industry, the screening apparatus comprising at least one screen member intermediate the slurry inlet and slurry outlet, the screen member being vertically mounted to permit slurry of a desired size to pass from the inlet to the outlet, and a sweeper arm on the outlet side of the screen to cause a momentary reverse flow in the slurry to assist in cleaning the screen member. There is also provided a screen member which is formed of wedge wires which are oriented in a vertical direction to provide slots therebetween which are also vertically oriented to minimize blinding of the screen member.
