ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A well pump operating and control mechanism provides means whereby the lifting (rod pulling) stroke of the pumping cycle can be speeded up relative to the downward (gravity) stroke of the pump rod thereby to allow the overall cycle to be speeded up, The control mechanism also acts as a safety device which averts costly damage to the well and pump jack in the event of pump rod jamming.
