A pump apparatus for pumping a fluid from an area of fluid accumulation, comprising an elongated housing having a substantially hollow interior divided into a plurality of zones including; i) a first zone to receive fluid expelled from the pump apparatus; ii) a second zone having an inlet for the ingress of said fluid into said second zone and an outlet for the discharge of said fluid into said first zone; iii) a third zone sealingly isolated from all other of said plurality of zones filled with a compressible fluid at a predetermined pressure; and iv) a fourth zone that can be selectively pressured up and pressured down by alternately adding and removing a substantially non-- compressible fluid thereto and therefrom; a first piston slidably and sealingly disposed in said second zone for reciprocal movement towards and away from said first zone; a second piston slidingly and sealingly disposed in said housing to separate said third and fourth zones; connecting means extending between said first and second pistons for reciprocation of said pistons in tandem; conduit means for the flow of said non--compressible fluid into and out of said fourth zone; and pump means in fluid communication with said conduit means actuatable to supply said non- compressible fluid into said fourth zone at a pressure sufficient to overcome the pressure of said compressible fluid in said third zone thereby moving said first and second pistons in a direction which expels said fluid from said second zone into said first zone through said outlet, and then deactuatable to allow the pressure of said compressible fluid in said third zone to overcome the pressure of said non-compressible fluid in said fourth zone thereby moving said pistons in a direction which results in fluid from said area of accumulation being drawn into said second zone through said inlet thereinto.
