Water accumulating within gas producing wells is typically pumped to the surfacewhere it is contained and transported off-site. It has been proposed instead to pump such accumulated water deposits to a lower water absorption zone below the gas producing zone and thus dissipate the unwanted water into the surrounding earth. To date, however, a practical pumping device to accomplish this end has not been readily available. Such a device is disclosed in the specification herein and is comprised of an outer barrel contain- ing a piston. The piston consists of a hollow mandrel shaft upon which is mounted a plural- ity of packing rings with bushing material at either end. End plugs are threaded onto each end of the mandrel compressing and expanding the packing rings sandwiched therebetween. Thus the clearance between piston and barrel may be adjusted to obtain the best pumping performance and to accommodate normal barrel wear. A pair of check valves, one at ei- ther end of the pump barrel and operating in opposition during normal use, control the flow of water from one zone to the other. A well is drilled through a gas producing zone, through one or more substantially water impervious zones to a water absorption zone. The well is cased and perforated adjacent the gas producing zone and the water absorption zone. A first check valve is installed in the bore of a well packer and the packer installed in the well casing between the water absorbing zone and the impervious zone immediately above. The pump barrel is sealingly connected to the packer at one end and the pump piston, via a second check valve, is connected to a sucker rod string and the sucker rod string to a surface pump jack. On the upward stroke of the piston, the hollow mandrel is charged with water. On the downward stroke the mandrel is discharged and the water dissipated through the casing perforations into the water absorption zone.
