ABSTRACT A pump system for waveguide lasers or amplifiers, formed from a waveguide having a monomode active region, in which the pump radiation is launched into a multimode guide surrounding the active region. This radiation is obtained as a sum of the radiations emitted by a plurality of independent sources. The waveguide can be a length of fibre, and the multimode guide a cladding surrounding the fibre, or the monomode and miltimode waveguide can be formed, as regions of an integrated optical guide, the multimode waveguide being formed by a confinement region and the monomode guide by an active region of the guide.
