ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A process for purifying caprolactam which has been obtained by Beckmann rearrangement, which process comprises: (a) extracting crude caprolactam with solvents; (b) distilling the extract in the presence of alkali and isolating pure capro- lactam; (c) treating the distillation residue from (b) by distilling off caprolactam at a bottom temperature of 130 - 160°C and recycling the caprolactam obtained to distillation stage (b); (d) distilling the residue thus obtained at (c) at a bottom temperature of 140 - 180°C; and (e) treating the distillate obtained in (d) with strongly acidic agents and recycling the treated distillate to extraction stage (a).
