- 1 - ABSTRACT Metallic impurities are removed from a bath of molten metal, in a vacuum chamber, by applying vacuum effective to produce a bulk flow of gases from the surface of the metal accessible to the vacuum. An upwardly moving stream of molten metal and a lifting gas are formed by cycling metal from within the bath and leading it under confinement in risers to a position above the bath surface and releasing it from the risers to provide a spray of metal droplets which shower onto the bath surface. Impurities are continuously isolated from the bath. The size of the bubbles are controlled so that the droplets of molten metal in the spray are within the range from about 1 to about 10.mm. This is done by adjusting the maximum cross-sectional dimension through each riser to between five to twenty millimeters.
