ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the preparation of activated .gamma.- TiCl3, useful as a catalyst component in the polymerization of olefinically unsaturated compounds, in particular propane, which comprises the following steps: (a) freeing TiCl3, obtained by reduction of TiCl4 with an alkyl aluminium compound at temperature below 20°C from dissolved aluminium compounds by washing with a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon and separation of the washed TiCl3 from the hydrocarbon, the washing and separation being carried out at a temperature of from 40°C to 200°C; (b) heat-treating the TiCl3 at a temperature of from 80°C to 225°C.
