FS 1421 ABSTRACT PURIFYING MOLTEN METAL The invention relates to a means of purifying molten metal, particularly molten steel during the continuous casting process. The molten metal flows in a tundish (1) passed one or more protuberances (4, 5) in the longitudinal sidewalls of the tundish, there being associated with the protuberances a partial barrier (8, 9) disposed towards the metal zone of arrival (6) and/or outlet (10), whereby the free-flow area of the tundish is reduced and metal flow velocity increased. In a preferred embodiment the metal flows underneath a first partial barrier, between a pair of diametrically-opposed sidewall protuberances and then over a second partial barrier. The metal flow is thereby directed upwards so that it can come into contact with a surface-covering layer of flux to remove inclusions.
