ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved guidance system for a drilling apparatus of the type used in mining operations. The instrument package for the guidance system gathers information from roll, pitch, and a 3-position magnetometer along with a gamma counter, and converts the information to a multiplexed signal which is subsequently used to frequency modulate a pulse train. The pulse train is then transmitted down a long cable to a receiving apparatus where the pulse train is processed by a microprocessor which demultiplexes the information, computes the roll, pitch, azimuth and gamma count and displays the computed results on appropriate visual indicators. The operator can, from the displayed data, operate the drill in accordance with procedures already outlined in the prior art. One of the difficulties with prior art devices has been the inability to transmit data in the presence of large background noise such as would be generated by current flowing through the area under investiga- tion covered by trolley currents, mining machine currents, etc. The present invention overcomes the aforementioned difficulties by generating a unique pulse train which is frequency modulated, the noise, being generally one that would affect amplitude, can be clipped and eliminated.
