ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A push-pull ballast for an arc discharge lamp has a high power portion and a low power portion. The high power portion consists of a semiconductor switching in- verter and a transformer for a step-up or step-down of voltage to be supplied to a load. The low power portion consists of a control circuit which is sensitive to a load parameter such as load current. The control circuit provides instantaneous control over the switching inverter, thereby providing the advantages of high input power factor and precise control over the load voltage and current characteristics.
