This particular invention has been entitled - PVC Produce Basket. This title has been chosen because the invention is primarily composed of PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) plastic (its handle being composed of nylon). Its primary purpose is to contain many different types of farm produce including tomatoes, peaches, potatoes, apples, plums, beans, etc., and among others. Its nature is that of a basket yet it is unique and warrants patent status as it is manufactured from PVC plastic, a material never before utilized in the creation of a produce basket. Further, the specific design of the basket itself is unique. Particularly unique and practical is the basket handle which is made of nylon and cradles the basket on three sides. The handle extends upward from both sides of the basket in two semi-loops joined below the basket bottom at a single point. This denotes that the handle is comprised of a single strand of nylon kept in place where it passes through four slits in the PVC Basket rim. This handle is extremely flexible and can either be collapsed inside the basket or made to open wider than the basket rim allowing for easy access to the contents therein. At the bottom of the basket are three holes intended to act as fluid drains which also allow for air ventilation from the bottom. This feature alone, along with the novelty of the nylon handle , makes the PVC Produce Basket a revolutionary new product for the fresh produce market. Also at the bottom of the basket and further extending up the sides are small canals which allow for air circulation around the contents of the basket prolonging the shelf life of those specific contents. The basket is manufactured to meet the standard size specifications of Paper Produce Baskets commonly used today and referred to as four-litre baskets. A further advantage of utilizing PVC plastic in the manufacture of these baskets is that of colour selection. One would have their choice of colours when using these baskets; an option certainly not presently available. Not mentioned as of yet is the improved strength of the PVC basket. In comparative tests the PVC Basket is 10.4 times stronger than existing Paper Baskets and because of its material nature it is not susceptible to liquid damage the way current Paper Baskets are. These PVC Baskets are of a reusable nature or they may be recycled depending upon the personal choice of the consumer. Each basket is stamped with the recyclable logo according to SPI, CPI, EPIC and PFMAC specifications corresponding to a rating of '3', that of PVC plastic. Furthermore this rating is approved in publication ISBN 0-7729-8107-8 entitled Industrial Waste Diversion Program: Recycling Of Flexible PVC Waste; a report prepared for the Waste Management Branch of the Ministry of the Environment in June 1991, copyright: Queen's Printer 1991; PIBS 1565. When considered as a whole, this new format of basket represents a major advancement in produce basket manufacturing and is worthy of patent status. - 2 -
