A cruising system for the visualization of objects in a hierarchical structure shows a selected object in the central cell on a screen while the next level of descendants from the object are visualized in surrounding cells. When a cruising control is focused, cells are moved on the screen while the contents in cells are changed accordingly to other objects in the structure. A method is provided for representing hierarchical relationships between objects by associating objects with rooms in a pyramid structure, in which the hierarchical relationships between rooms are predefined. Each room is assigned a room-number comprising a serial of numbers that indicate its location in the structure. An implementation of pyramid structure is provided as an array with predefined number of elements which themselves are arrays with the same structure and definitions as the enclosing array.
