ABSTRACT New halogenated pyrazolone derivatives, useful as selective herbicides, have the formula Image (I) wherein: R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R2 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms; X represents a halogen atom; Y represents a halogen atom, a nitro group, an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or an alkoxy group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and n = 1, 2 or 3 (and, when n = 2 or 3, the substituents Y may be the same or different). They are prepared by treating with a halogenating agent the corresponding compounds which have no halogen substituent at position 4 of the pyrazolone ring.
