PS 34907 ABSTRACT PYRIDAZINONE MANUFACTURE An improved method is provided for the manufacture of plant growth regulant pyridazine-4-one carboxylic acids of formula (I): Image (I) where: R1 is a phenyl group, optionally substituted with e.g. alkyl or halo groups, R3 is H, allyl or halo; R5 is a carboxy group or a derivative thereof; R6 is H, alkyl or halo. The method comprises the step of decarboxylating a 4-oxo-3,5-pyridazine dicarboxylic acid to give a 4-oxo-5-pyridazine carboxylic acid by treatment with 95-100% sulphuric acid at 160°C-180°C using a reactant: acid weight ratio of about 1:4 to 1:10. Compounds of formula (I) are particularly useful as chemical hybridising agents, acting as male sterilants for cereal crops such as wheat and barley and used to make hybrids in such crops.
