ABSTRACT New pyridine-3-sulphonamides, which have a nitro, amino or alkylamino substituent at the 5- position and are substituted or unsubstituted at the 6- position and at the amido nitrogen atom, are useful as anticoccidial agents, particularly against the form of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria tenella or Eimeria necatrix. They may be prepared by: (I) reacting 5-bromo-3-pyridine- sulphonamide with ammonia to produce 5-amino-3-pyridine- sulphonamide, optionally oxidizing the latter to form 5-nitro-3-pyridinesulphonamide and optionally reacting this compound with an acid anhydride or chloride to produce the corresponding N-alkanoyl compound; (II) reacting 5-nitro-3-pyridinesulphonyl chloride with an amine to produce the corresponding sulphonamide; (III) reacting a 5-bromo-3-pyridinesulphonamide with ammonia or with an alkylamine to produce a corresponding 5-amino-3- pyridinesulphonamide or 5-alkylamino-3-pyridinesulphon- amide: (IV) chlorinating 6-amino-5-nitro-3-pyridinesulphonic acid, e.g. with phosphorus pentachloride, and then reacting the product with an amine to give the corresponding 6-amino- 5-nitro-3-pyridinesulphonamide; or (V) reacting a 6-halo- 5-nitro-3-pyridinesulphonyl halide with an amine to give the corresponding 6-amino-5-nitro-3-pyridinesulphonamide.
