A B S T R A C T Pyrimidinone compounds of the formula : Image are described, wherein R1 is selected from various optionally substituted phenyl and heterocyclic groups; X is methylene or in certain instances oxygen; Y is sulphur or methylene; Z is hydrogen or C1-6alkyl; A is an optionally interrupted alkylene chain and R2 is an N-substituted pyridone. Processes for their preparation are described, as is their use as histamine H2-antagonists. Novel intermediates are described.
