ABSTRACT A process for the pyrolysis of biomass can produce maximum liquid yields by using a reactor capable of rapid heat exchange and short gas residence times. The pyrolysis process is carried out under specific reaction conditions to produce a pyrolysis liquid containing 10% to 30% water. The pyrolysis liquid can be further processed to divide it into a water-rich fraction and a water-poor fraction and these fractions can be further processed to obtain specific desirable products.
