A pyrotechnic material, in particular for pyrotechnic trains suitable for use in single- or multi-train delay systems, ignition and detonation transfer, comprising at least two different materials concurrently vapour deposited so as to produce a single phase largely disordered structure, which different materials are conjointly capable of undergoing an exothermic process, whereby a more ordered structure is produced, when subjected to heat. The different materials preferably function respectively as an electron donor material and an electron acceptor material, and are conveniently a transition metal and a material is selected from materials of Groups IIIB and IVB. The invention also provides a method of manufacture of toe above pyrotechnic material by concurrent vapour deposition, especially by unbalanced magnetron sputtering.
