21489-7503 5-16640/= Novel pyrrolidine-2,5-diones and 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroisoindole-1,3-diones Abstract of the Disclosure There are disclosed novel herbicidally active pyrrolidine-2,5-diones and 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroisoindole,3-diones of formula Image (I), wherein R1 is hydrogen; or C1-C4alkyl; R2 is C1-C4alkyl; or R1 and R2, when taken together, are a (CH2)4 group which may be substi- tuted by one or two C1-C4alkyl groups; X is hydrogen; or halogen; A is -?-R3; or O-R4; R3 is hydroxy; (C1-C8)-alkoxy; (C1-C4)-alkoxy-(C1-C4)-alkoxy; (C1-C4)- alkylthio-(C1-C4)-alkoxy; mono- or di(C1-C4)-alkylamino-(C1-C4)-alk- oxy; (C1-C8)-cyanoalkoxy; (C3-C8)-alkenyloxy; (C3-C8)-haloalkenyloxy; (C3-Ca)-alkynyloxy; (C3-C7)-cycloalkoxy; (C3-C7)-cycloalkyl-(C1-C4)- alkoxy; halo(C3-C7)-cycloalkoxy; unsubstituted or substituted benzyl- oxy, phenoxy or phenylthio the salt groups -O-Na, -O-K, -O-(Ca)0.5, -O-(Mg)0.5 or -O-NH4; amino; unsubstituted or substituted (C1-C4)- alkylamino or di(C1-C4)-alkylamino; (C3-C4)-alkenylamino; diallyl- amino; N-pyrrolidino; N-piperidino; N-morpholino; N-thiomorpholino; N-piperazino; (C1-C8)-alkylthio; (C3-C8)-alkenylthio; benzylthio; unsubstituted or substituted (C1-C4)-alkylthio or (C1-C4)-alkoxy; R4 is (C1-C8)-alkyl; (C3-C7)-cycloalkyl; (C3-C7)-cycloalkyl-(C1-C4)- alkyl; (C3-C7)-halocycloalkyl; (C1-C8)-alkylcarbonyl; allylcarbonyl; unsubstituted or substituted benzylcarbonyl, benzoyl or dioxolanyl; furoyl; thienoyl; unsubstituted or substituted C1-C4alkyl. The invention further relates to the preparation of the compounds of formula I, to herbicidal compositions containing them and to the use thereof as herbicides and plant growth regulators, and to novel inter- mediates for the preparation of these compounds.
