Disclosed are pyrrolidine and thiazolidine amides of the formula (see formula I) (wherein X is S or (CH2)n, n is 1 or 2; Y is CHO, COCF3, hydroxyalkyl,COCO2R or hydrogen; and Z is (see formula II) W is -(CH2)r-NHCO-, -CO-, -S(O)p-, -COO(CH2)r-, -NH- or -O-, T is (see formula III) the broken line represents an optional bond, p is 0 or 2, A is phenyl or cycloalkyl, G is CH or N, E is alkylene; d is 1 or 2 and r is 1 to 5) useful for enhancing learning behavior and memory and in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and in prevention of ischemic damage following a stroke or other injury to the central nervous system.
