A channel unit for providing service to four channels in a digital loop carrier transmission system. The channel unit includes a first register that stores information related exclusively to a first and second channel and a second register that stores information related exclusively to a third and fourth channel. The channel unit also includes a system for taking a logical OR function of the bits in the second register and writing the result into another portion of the first register.
