A bale pick-up is used with a round bale carrier of the type having means for carrying round bales arranged end-to-end in a row substantially aligned with the direction of travel of the carrier. The pick-up has a bale engaging cradle with a fixed bale support arm normally projecting laterally from the side of the carrier and a movable bale support arm with an initial forwardly projecting position and a bale supporting position projecting laterally parallel to the fixed arm. The two arms are mounted on a swing arm which is itself pivotally mounted on a lift arm. The various components are controlled by a hydraulic circuit that first closes the movable bale support arm then applies a lifting force to the cradle and turns the cradle and bale through a one quarter turn (90). The pick-up then lifts the bale to a receiving position on the bale support. The carrier may have a second bale support parallel to the first and a kicker at the receiving station of the first support for transferring bales from the first support to the second.
