A quaternary ammonium compound represented by the general formula (I) or (I'): (I) or (I') wherein A represents C<sub>1-4</sub> linear alkyl, C<sub>2-4</sub> branched alkyl, hydroxylated C<sub>1-4</sub> linear alkyl, or hydroxylated C<sub>2-4</sub> branched alkyl; R<sub>1</sub> to R<sub>3</sub> are the same or different and each represents linear or branched C<sub>1-12</sub> alkyl; one of R<sub>4</sub> to R<sub>8</sub> represents CO<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> or SO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>, at most three of the remaining ones of R<sub>4</sub> to R<sub>8</sub> each represents a group selected from the group consisting of hydroxy and C<sub>1-4</sub> alkoxy, and the remainder of R<sub>4</sub> to R<sub>8</sub> represents hydrogen; one of R'<sub>4</sub> to R'<sub>8</sub> represents CO<sub>2</sub>H or SO<sub>3</sub>H, at most three of the remaining ones of R'<sub>4</sub> to R'<sub>8</sub> each represents a group selected from the group consisting of protected hydroxy and C<sub>1-4</sub> alkoxy, and the remainder of R'<sub>4</sub> to R'<sub>8</sub> represents hydrogen; and X<sup>-</sup> represents an anion capable of forming a salt with the quaternary ammonium group.
