QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUNDS AND METHOD FOR THEIR MANUFACTURE Abstract of the Disclosure Quaternary ammonium compounds having the general formula: -IMAGE- wherein m is either 0, 1, 2, or 3; each R5 may be the same or different and are selected from the groups including straight- or branched-chain alkyl or alkenyl radicals having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, inclusive, or a phenyl or benzyl radical, or the group R6 - O - R7 - wherein R6 is a C1-C20 alkyl or alkoxy group or a combination of such alkyl or alkoxy groups and R7 is a C2 or C3 alkyl group; R2 is H-, a C1 to C10 straight- or branched-chain alkyl or alkenyl radical, a phenyl group, a benzyl group, or a halogenated alkyl group; R3 and R4 are different or the same and are selected from the group including H-, or a C1 to C10 straight- or branched- chain alkyl or alkenyl radical, a phenyl group, or a benzyl group, and wherein n is an integer between 0 and 30, inclusive, and methods for their manufacture are described. The composi- tions of the alkoxvlated quaternary ammonium alkylene glycol - 1 - borate esters of the present invention are unknown to the prior art, although compounds comprised of an inorganic cation or an alkyl quaternary cation and this anion are known. The use of the present compounds as co-polyols in polyisocyanate and polyurethane foam manufacture eliminates the need for catalysts, such as alkali metal salts, which are generally required in foam manufacture. - 1a -
