ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A quaternary ammonium salt of an ester-lactone represented by the formula: Image in which w represents 0 or 1, x and y alternately represent 0 and 1, z has a value from 0 to 2, Ri, Rii and Riv, in instances where w is equal to 0, represent hydrogen or alkyl radicals at least one of which is a hydrocarbyl radical having from 50-200 carbon atoms; in instances where w is equal to 1 at least one of Ri, Rii, Riv, Rv or Rvi, represents a hydrocarbyl radical of 50-200 carbon atoms and the remaining substituents are hydrogen or lower alkyl radicals, Riii is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R is a divalent radical having from 2-6 carbon atoms or alkoxy alkyl radical wherein the divalent alkyl radicals have 2 to 4 carbon atoms, Rvii is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical, and X is an anion selected from the group consisting of halides, sulfates, carbonates, sulfites, borates, carboxylates and phosphates, is provided, as well as a method of preparation and a hydro- carbon lubricating oil composition containg same.
