ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE A quench chamber for a load disconnection switch comprises a synthetic shallow housing defining a narrow quench space for extinguishing electric arcs which develop between a follower knife contact and a stationary spark contact on disconnection of the switch. The follower knife contact is in the form of a blade contact and is arranged for pivotal movement within the quench space. The shallow housing is formed by an essentially rigid carrier frame to which two elastically deformable plates are fastened which define the side walls of the quench space. The plates are made of a material which gives off a quench gas to promote rapid extinction of the electric arc. This arrangment not only ensures low manufacturing costs but also enables the quench chamber to effectively quench electric arcs generated over a wide range of operating currents.
