ABSTRACT An improved quench oil for use in heat treating ferro-metals comprising a major amount of mineral oil containing (a) an ashless dispersant (e.g. alkenyl succinimide, alkenyl succinic ester, alkenyl succinic ester-amide or alkylphenol- formaldehyde-amine Mannich condensate), (b) an alkaline earth or an alkali metal detergent (e.g. calcium aryl sulfonate, calcium phosphonate phenate), and (c) an ashless antioxidant (e.g. alkylated diphenylamine, sterically hindered phenols or sulfurized alkylphenols).
