Abstract Disclosed is a quick disconnect assembly including a female fitting having a socket and a male fitting having a bayonet adapted to fit in the socket. Cooperative seals are carried by the female and male fittings for forming an airtight seal between the bayonet and the socket and releasable retaining device carried by one of the fittings retains the fittings in engagement with each other. The retaining device is circumferential in form and has a clamping end with axially extending slots therein to provide spring-like segmental lips, the clamping end being provided with an inwardly extending lip, the female fitting being provided with an annular recess receiving the annular lip and the other end of the retaining device having an annular shoulder. The male fitting has an annular recess adapted to receive the annular shoulder, the male fitting being provided with an inclined surface for camming the annular shoulder carried by the segmental lips outwardly to expand the clamping end of the retainer to clear the camming surface and to drop into the annular recess provided on the male fitting.
