Disclosed are novel compounds selected from the group consisting of: (1) a quinoline carboxylic acid of the formula: Image (wherein Z is NH2, R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R2 is a methyl or fluoromethyl group, and R3 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; or Z is F, R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R2 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl or fluoromethyl group, and R3 is a methyl group), (2) a pharmaceutically acceptable ester of the carboxylic acid (1), and (3) a pharmaceutically acceptable base salt or acid addition salt of the carboxylic acid (1) or the ester (2). These compounds are useful antibacterial agents.
