A steering system (10) for a four wheel drive, live axle vehicle (12) includes a rack and pinion steering gear assembly (80) including an elongate rack (100) having a longitudinal axis (102) and extending axially through a rack housing (82). The rack (100) is movable axially in the rack housing (82) in response to rotation of the vehicle steering wheel (104). A first end portion (108) of the rack (100) projects axially from the rack housing (82). A drag link (60) is connected between the first end portion of the rack and one of the first and second steering , arms (40, 44) for transmitting steering force to the one (40) of the first and second steering arms. The drag link (60) is pivotally connected with the rack (100) at a location (130) on the rack axis (102). The drag link (60) has a kinematic axis (68) which extends generally parallel to the rack axis (102).

Cette invention concerne un mécanisme de direction (10) sur le pont moteur (12) d'un véhicule à traction intégrale, qui comporte un ensemble à pignon et crémaillère (80) formé d'une crémaillère (100) dont l'axe longitudinal (102) coïncide avec l'axe longitudinal d'un carter de crémaillère (82). La crémaillère (100)se déplace dans le sens de la longueur du carter de crémaillère (82) lorsque le volant de direction (104) est tourné. Une première extrémité (108) de la crémaillère (100) fait saillie hors du carter (82) dans le prolongement de son axe longitudinal. Une biellette de direction (60) raccordée par un bout à la première extrémité (108) de la crémaillère et par son autre bout à l'un de deux leviers de fusée (40, 44) sert à transmettre l'effort de guidage à l'un desdits deux leviers de fusée (40). La biellette de direction (60) est articulée à la crémaillère (100) au point (130) de l'axe longitudinal (102) de la crémaillère. L'axe cinématique (68) de la biellette de direction (60) est généralement parallèle à l'axe de la crémaillère.
