The invention relates to a method of estimating a rainfall rate in the case of rain which only generates negligible attenuation using a bipolar radar. The inventive method comprises the following steps: the bipolar radar is used to measure the differential phase .PHI.¿DP? and the apparent reflectivity Z¿e? along at least one of the polarisations H or V over a given segment [r¿0?, r¿1?] of a ray path in relation to said radar; an estimate of value N¿0?*, which is representative of the dimensional distribution of the rain drops, is determined using the difference in differential phase between r¿0? and r¿1? and using an integral of a function of the apparent reflectivity Z¿e? along the length of segment [r¿0?, r¿1?]; the precipitation rate value is derived at a point using N¿o?* and the apparent reflectivity at said point.
L'invention concerne un procédé d'estimation d'un taux de précipitation dans le cas d'une pluie ne générant qu'une atténuation négligeable, au moyen d'un radar bipolaire, constitué par les étapes suivantes: on mesure, au moyen dudit radar bipolaire, sur un intervalle [r0, r1] donné de rayon de trajet par rapport audit radar, la phase différentielle .PHI.DP et la réflectivité apparente Ze selon au moins l'une des polarisations H ou V; on détermine une estimation de la valeur N0* représentative de la distribution dimensionnelle des gouttes de pluie, à partir de la différence de la phase différentielle entre r0 et r1 et à partir d'une intégrale d'une fonction de la réflectivité apparente Ze le long de l'intervalle [r0, r1]; on déduit la valeur du taux de précipitation en un point à partir de No* et de la réflectivité apparente en ce point.
