APPLICATION OF JAMES M. BROWN, JACK M. BROWN, RAY E. GARDNER, BURLEY C. SEMONES and HUGO H. UNRUH FOR RADIAL PLANAR COMMUTATOR FOR D.C. MACHINES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A D.C. permanent magnet machine having stator and rotor assemblies is described. The stator is provided with a plurality of electrically energizeable poles having windings which are electrically connected to associated commutator bars forming a radial array. The rotor is provided with a plurality of permanent magnet poles equal in number to the poles provided in the stator. A pair of concentric, substantially coplanar slip rings are associated with the stator for connection to opposite polarities of the D.C. source. An array of reversible brush holders is associated with the rotor and is located between the commutator bars and the slip rings. Each brush holder has a pair of spring-loaded brushes connected by a flexible conductor of predetermined length for selectively and progressively electrically connecting one of the concentric slip rings with the radial commutator bars.
