This invention relates to an apparatus for reefing the sail on a sailing craft. The mechanism used in this apparatus is similar to the opening and closing of oriental fans. The main elements of this apparatus are reefing lines, fairleads (fittings for guiding the lines), and battens. The invention can be used either in its basic form, or with a multi-level reefing system. The latter leads to a better hang of the sail. Compared to the common methods of reefing, this apparatus is easier and faster to setup and operate. It can be handled by one person; without the need to move on the sailing craft. Furthermore this invention facilitates transportation and storage of the sail. These properties make this invention especially practical for small vessels such as canoes and kayaks.
