A body ply (12) comprising an elastomeric sheet (30) and a plurality of rows of reinforcement cords (32) embedded therein. The plurality of rows can comprise two parallel rows (32a, 32b) of reinforcement cords and the reinforcement cords in one row can be transversely staggered relative to the reinforcement cords in an adjacent row. To make the body ply (12), the reinforcement cords (32) are introduced into a die assembly (44) and rubber is extruded around and between the reinforcement cords. Existing equipment, namely an extrusion apparatus (40) conventionally used to manufacture steel belts or single layer body ply material, can be used to make the body ply material by providing an appropriate replacement insert (56) for its die assembly.
L'invention concerne une nappe carcasse (12) comportant une membrane (30) élastomère et une pluralité de rangées de cordons (32) de renfort enchassés dans ladite membrane. La pluralité de rangées peut comprendre deux rangées parallèles (32a, 32b) de cordons de renfort et les cordons de renfort d'une rangée peuvent être décalés transversalement par rapport aux cordons de renfort d'une rangée adjacente. On constitue une nappe carcasse (12) en introduisant les cordons (32) de renfort dans un ensemble (44) d'extrusion et en extrudant de l'élastomère autour et entre les cordons de renfort. Il est possible de fabriquer la nappe carcasse en employant un dispositif existant, à savoir un appareil (40) à extrusion habituellement utilisé pour fabriquer des ceintures en acier ou une nappe carcasse monocouche, et en munissant l'ensemble d'extrusion d'un insert de remplacement approprié.
