RADIALLY MOVING TRIGGER MECHANISM AND TRANSMISSION OVERSPEED INHIBITOR USING SAME A B S T R A C T A drive transmission comprises a gear section having an input shaft, an output shaft, a plurality of gears and shift means for interconnecting said gears in any of a plurality of predetermined relationships. An input clutch couples the gear section input shaft to an engine and has an engaged and a disengaged position. An output clutch couples a driven load and said gear section output shaft and has an engaged position and a disengaged position. An automatic operating control selectively applies fluid pressure to the output clutch. An overspeed inhibitor is coupled to, the control and the output clutch for overriding the control by changing the pressure of fluid applied to the output clutch. Means responsive to the input shaft rotating above a predeter- mined or preselected rate causes the overspeed inhibitor to override the control. A trigger mechanism provides stepwise linear motion responsive to a shaft rotating above a predeter- mined rate. The trigger mechanism comprises a rotating shaft having a collar rotatable therewith. A plurality of arcuate cams are mounted within the collar and the centers of the arcs are forced centrifugally to adjacent the collar when the shaft rotates above said predetermined rate (at overspeed). Cams are fitted end to end to define a first circular path at a normal shaft rotation rate, and a second circular path having a different radius above said predetermined shaft rotation rate. A tang extends into said first circular path at said normal shaft rotation rate and into said second circular path above said predetermined shaft rotation rate. Non-rotating cams shift laterally responsive to tang shifting between the circular paths.
