BP File No. 3491-019 - 18 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A radiant fiber burner for the combustion of gaseous fuel/oxidant mixtures which exhibits high resistance to flashback/pre-ignition regardless of fuel/oxidant proportions or volumetric flow rates. The burner is comprised of a random matrix of permeable refractory fibers forming a geometric body and incorporating an array of ports through the body of the matrix as primary fuel/oxidant mixture passages. Secondary permeation of the fuel/oxidant mixture through the fiber matrix creates partial subcutaneous combustion in operation.
